महाभारत के पहले अध्याय का पांचवां उप-अध्याय, कुरु वंश के सम्राट जनमेजय द्वारा किए गए सर्प सत्र या सर्पयज्ञ नामक एक अजीब तरह के अनूठे यज्ञ के बारे में बताता है, जो अपने पिता परीक्षित की मृत्यु के बाद हस्तिनापुर के सिंहासन पर चढ़ा था।
परीक्षित अभिमन्यु का पुत्र और अर्जुन का पोता था और पांडु का अकेला जीवित वंशज था। उन्हें शमीक ऋषि के पुत्र श्रृंगी ऋषि ने सांप के काटने से मरने का श्राप दिया था। श्राप सर्प राज तक्षक द्वारा पूरा किया गया था।
जनमेजय ने बदला लेने के लिए, एक महान सर्प सत्र - एक यज्ञ करके सभी नागों को पूरी तरह से मिटा देने का फैसला किया, जो सभी जीवित नागों को नष्ट कर देगा।
उस समय, आयु में छोटे एक लड़के, अस्तिक नामक एक विद्वान ऋषि ने यज्ञ को रोकने के लिए हस्तक्षेप किया; अस्तिक की माता जरत्कारू एक नागिन थीं और उनके पिता का नाम भी जरत्कारू था, जो एक एक साधु ब्राह्मण थे।
महाभारत का यह भाग गरुड़ की कहानी भी बताता है। कश्यप प्रजापति की दो पत्नियाँ विनता और कद्रू संतान की कामना कर रही थीं। कश्यप ने उन्हें पुत्र प्राप्ति का एक-एक वरदान दिया। कद्रू ने एक हजार नाग पुत्र मांगे, जबकि विनता ने केवल दो के लिए प्रार्थना की, जो ताकत और वीरता में कद्रू के सभी हजार पुत्रों से श्रेष्ठ हो। कश्यप ने उनकी इच्छा पूरी की।
बाद में कद्रू ने एक हजार अंडों को जन्म दिया, जबकि विनता ने दो अंडों को जन्म दिया। पाँच सौ वर्षों तक उन्हें सेते रहने के बाद, कद्रू के अण्डों से हजार पुत्र निकले। अपने ही पुत्रों के लिए अधीर विनता ने अपना एक अंडा तोड़ा जिससे पूर्णतः विकसित न हुआ अरुण निकला। अरुण ने अपनी माँ को उसकी अधीरता के लिए डांट दूसरा अंडा न तोड़ने की चेतावनी दी, तथा उसे दास होने का श्राप दिया जब तक कि दूसरे अंडे से निकला उसका पुत्र उसे मुक्त नहीं कर लेता।
इसके बाद, विनता को कद्रू ने छल से गुलाम बना लिया, क्योंकि वह एक शर्त हार गई थी।
इस बीच, विनता के दूसरे अंडे से गरुड़ का जन्म हुआ। उसने अपने चचेरे भाइयों, सांपों को अपनी मां को उसकी दास्यता से मुक्त करने के लिए कहा, जिसके लिए उन्होंने अमृता को स्वर्ग से मांगा।
गरुड़ ने देवताओं के खिलाफ युद्ध किया, इंद्र सहित उन सभी को हराया और इंद्र का अमृत पात्र ले लिया। विष्णु ने प्रभावित होकर, गरुड़ को अपना वाहन होने की इच्छा जताई, जिसके लिए वे सहमत हो गए। इंद्र ने गरुड़ से अनुरोध किया कि वह नागों को अमृत न दें क्योंकि इससे ब्रह्मांड को बहुत खतरा होगा। इसलिए उन्होंने एक योजना बनाई। नागों के पास पहुंचने पर, गरुड़ ने उनके सामने अमृत का पात्र रखा और पहले अपनी मां विनता को रिहा करने के लिए कहा। रिहा होने के तुरंत बाद, इंद्र ने अमृत का वापस चुरा लिया।
The Fifth subchapter of the First Chapter in Mahabharata, speaks about a weirdly unique sacrifice (Yagya) called Sarpa Satra or Snake sacrifice performed by Emperor Janamejaya of the Kuru Dynasty who had ascended to the throne of Hastinapura upon the death of his father Parikshit.
Parikshit was the son of Abhimanyu and grandson of Arjuna and was the lone descendant of the House of Pandu. He had been cursed by sage Shrungi, son of Sage Shamik, to die of a snake bite. The curse was fulfilled by the serpent-chieftain Takshaka.
Janamejaya, out of revenge, decided to wipe all serpents altogether by performing a great Sarpa Satra – a sacrifice (Yagya) that would destroy all living serpents.
At that time, a learned sage named Astika, a boy in age, intervened to stop the Yagya; Astika's mother, Jaratkaru, was a Naga and his father was also named Jaratkaru a saintly Brahmin.
This section of the Mahabharat also narrates the story of Garuda. Kashyapa Prajapati's two wives Vinata and Kadru wished to have children. Kashyapa granted them a boon each. Kadru asked for one thousand serpent sons, while Vinata asked for just two, each surpassing all of Kadru's thousand sons in strength and valor. Kashyapa granted their wishes.
Later, Kadru gave birth to one thousand eggs, while Vinata gave birth to two eggs. After incubating them for five hundred years, Kadru's eggs hatched, and out came her thousand sons. Vinata, impatient for her own sons, broke one of her eggs from which the partially formed Aruna emerged. Aruna chided his mother, Vinata for her impatience, and warned her to not break open the second egg, cursing her to be a slave until his brother rescued her.
Thereafter, Vinata was enslaved by Kadru through trickery, as she lost a bet.
Meanwhile, Vinata waited for the second egg to hatch, out of which Garuda was born. He asked his brothers, the snakes, to free his mother from her slavery, to which they demanded Amrita from heaven.
Garuda battled against gods, defeated all of them, including Indra, and took Indra's nectar vessel. Vishnu, impressed, came to Garuda and asked him to be his ride, to which he agreed. Indra requested Garuda to not give the Amrita to the Nagas as it would bring great trouble to the universe. So they forged a plan. Upon reaching the serpents, Garuda placed the vessel before them and asked to first release his mother, Vinata. Soon after she was released, Indra stole the vessel back.
